Moving to the Country, Gonna eat a lot of peaches!
I would be lying if I didn’t say that “Peaches” by The Presidents Of The United States Of America was stuck in my head the entire thirty minute drive to the Perth Hills. Through my year six flash back I was getting more and more excited about exploring S&R Orchard and eating my fill of stone-fruits on this hot Sunday morning.
Upon arrival we pulled in to the paddock for free parking (yay!) but if the paddock is full, there is overflow parking along the street. Entry for the day is $10 for each adult, but free for children under twelve. With entry, we received an empty plastic bag each for us to fill to the brim with freshly plucked stone fruits for us to take home. The orchard had a bouncy castle for kids, a food truck, ice cream truck and covered tables for setting and a break from the sun. There was also a section of already picked fruit, just incase you can’t find any on the orchard trees.
There were rows and rows of fruit trees. Everything from peaches to nectarines to plums. I was on a “peach” mission, probably due to the song stuck in my head, so we dashed toward the row of peach trees. The orchard opened its gates to the public just the day before, so the peach trees had been well picked, but we did manage to find some. Sadly, a couple of the old peach trees had been broken from people climbing on them just the day before. So if you go, please do not climb on the trees. A lot of the peaches were just out of reach, but they did have step ladders around, however next time we may bring our own.
The towering trees provided a lot of shade and some of them were being watered, which helped keep us nice and cool, despite it being a 32 degree day. I loved seeing families setting up picnics between the plum trees (which were bursting with fruit) and the children running along side the rows of trees. The best part was being able to snack on the fruit as we picked some to take home. We had the BEST nectarine of our lives: ripped and juicy, right from the orchard. It doesn’t get much better than that! And if you’re under twelve, then there are “millions of peaches, peaches for freeeee”… or nectarines and plums.
S&R Orchard is a second generation family owned and operated orchard and is only 35 minutes from Perth CBD, just 4 minutes from Kalamunda. Fruit picking will be open to the public every weekend in February and the first weekend in March, where you will find the best plums and nectarines around! Hours are from 8am to 1pm. Get the family out of the house for a lovely picnic and keep the orchards going… oh yay, and eat some yummy fruit.
